ARN Terminates A$100M Sandilands Contract Over On-Air Dispute

ARN Media terminated Kyle Sandilands' A$100M radio contract following an on-air dispute, triggering legal action and threatening the show's future.

ARN Terminates A$100M Sandilands Contract Over On-Air Dispute

ARN Media has officially terminated its services agreement with radio presenter Kyle Sandilands, ending a contract reportedly worth A$100 million and part of a broader A$200 million deal for the Kyle and Jackie O show. Sandilands announced on March 18, 2026 that he would contest the termination through legal action.

ARN Cites Serious Misconduct Following February 20 Broadcast

ARN Media stated that Sandilands' behavior during a live broadcast on February 20, 2026 constituted "serious misconduct" and a breach of its services agreement with Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd, Sandilands' contracting entity. ARN issued a formal 14-day remedy notice following the incident. When no resolution was reached, ARN proceeded with termination.

Sandilands rejected the characterization. "Jackie and I had a blue on air. That's it. The kind of thing we've done a hundred times in 25 years," he said in a public statement. He accused ARN of using the dispute as an opportunity to exit the contract, saying: "They thought they saw a chance to get out of the contract they signed with me a year ago, and they ran with it."

Sandilands pointed to his performance record in his defense. "Number one ratings. Year after year. Hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for their business. I held up my end. I always have," he said. His contract was reportedly valid through 2034. He has indicated a legal claim of approximately A$88 million is likely.

Henderson Contract Also Terminated in Separate Action

Co-host Jackie "O" Henderson's contract was terminated separately on March 3, 2026. ARN acted after Henderson stated she could not continue working with Sandilands. Legal commentary suggests her statement may have constituted repudiation of her Henderson Media services agreement, which ARN then accepted by proceeding with termination. Henderson has indicated she will pursue the matter through legal channels.

When Radio Rebrands Collide With Legal Complications
Nova's newly launched Sydney breakfast show faced immediate crisis when co-host Tim Blackwell was served an interim AVO, forcing the network to navigate legal complications during its advertiser showcase.

The dual termination involved three distinct legal entities: ARN Media, Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd, and Henderson Media. ARN disclosed the termination via an ASX market announcement, making the dispute a matter of public record for investors.

Show Held 16.3% Sydney Share Before Termination

The Kyle and Jackie O show held a 16.3% audience share in Sydney at the time of termination but only a 5% share in Melbourne. The show will no longer air on ARN. Sandilands stated: "I'm not done. Not by a long way."

Workplace relations analysts have noted that Australia's Fair Work Act 2009 applies to on-air workplace conduct, and that the Australian Communications and Media Authority imposes broadcasting licence conditions related to decency standards. The dispute therefore carries both contractual and regulatory dimensions for ARN.

Both Sandilands and Henderson have indicated the dispute will be resolved in court. Sandilands has stated he complied with all ARN requests during his two-week suspension and offered to return to air, but ARN declined. ARN has not publicly responded to this characterization.

The case is one of the highest-value talent contract terminations in Australian broadcasting history. Legal proceedings are expected to follow in the coming months.
