Why Chatime Is Shifting Marketing Control Back to Sydney
Chatime restructures marketing leadership, appointing Alison Walsh as CMO reporting to Sydney HQ instead of Singapore. A shift signaling QSR brands' move toward localized marketing control in Asia ...
Bubble tea chain Chatime has appointed Alison Walsh as Chief Marketing Officer for Australia, marking a significant shift in how the Taiwan-founded brand manages its marketing operations in the country.
Walsh, who spent 17 years at Guzman y Gomez (GYG) as head of sales and marketing, joins Chatime in early 2026. She reports directly to Charlley Zhao, Chatime Australia's Managing Director.
Marketing Structure Shifts from Singapore to Sydney
The appointment follows two recent leadership changes. Global CMO Jeff Chang departed in October 2025. National marketing manager Rachel Druce then left in December 2025 after approximately one year in the role.

Walsh's predecessor reported to the Singapore-based Chang. Walsh will now report locally to Zhao, reflecting a deliberate structural change. A company spokesperson confirmed: "The business is now moving back to a locally led C-suite model as the Australian market enters its next stage of growth."
Chatime had moved to a globally led marketing structure in 2022. That model has now been reversed.
Zhao described the timing as significant. "We're excited to welcome Alison at a pivotal moment," he said. "Her proven track record will be critical in Chatime's next phase."
Walsh's mandate covers brand strategy, product development, digital initiatives, campaign delivery, and social media. She said her priority is clear: "Driving sales growth by aligning strategy, brand and commercial outcomes. The priority is moving with pace, staying culturally relevant, and ensuring every initiative delivers measurable commercial impact."
Brand-Building Replaces Network Expansion
Chatime Australia has surpassed 150 stores nationally. The company says its focus now shifts from building store numbers to strengthening the brand itself.
A company spokesperson stated the business is focused on "strengthening the brand, driving sustainable sales growth and evolving our core range beyond bubble tea to keep the brand relevant in a highly competitive beverage market."
Walsh's GYG background is directly relevant here. She was among GYG's first head-office hires and helped scale the brand from a single-location startup to a multi-billion-dollar operation across Australia, Singapore, Japan, and the US. That trajectory mirrors the journey Chatime is now attempting in Australia.
Walsh brings over 20 years of consumer brand experience to the role.
A Broader QSR Trend Toward Local Marketing Leadership
Chatime's restructure reflects a wider pattern across the quick-service restaurant (QSR) sector in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.
In early 2026, Flynn Group, which holds master franchise rights for Wendy's in Australia and New Zealand, appointed Corina Black as its inaugural CMO for Asia Pacific, based in Sydney. Flynn Group simultaneously appointed Richard Wallis as Managing Director for Asia Pacific, creating the same dual local MD and CMO structure that Chatime has now adopted.
Black described her mandate as delivering "a brand with personality, quality menu, and shareable experience," a brief closely parallel to Walsh's own at Chatime.
Chatime's Global Expansion Provides Strategic Context
Chatime's Australian restructure sits within a larger global growth push. Global CEO Carlos Antonius, who was elevated from his role as Chatime Australia CEO in July 2024, is targeting 2,500 locations worldwide by 2027, up from 1,500 current locations. That represents a 67% expansion target.
Antonius oversaw Chatime Australia's growth to 200 locations during his tenure as local CEO, repositioning the brand to become the largest in its category in Australia. His four-pillar global strategy includes market profitability, menu and product innovation, a brand refresh called Project Joy, and new market identification with a focus on the US and European markets.
Walsh's appointment positions Australia as a key proof-of-concept market as Chatime pursues that global agenda.
