Georgie Gardner Exits Nine After 24 Years Amid Network Restructure

Georgie Gardner departs Nine Network after 24 years as the broadcaster consolidates streaming and broadcast operations. What this means for Australian news talent strategy.

Georgie Gardner Exits Nine After 24 Years Amid Network Restructure

Georgie Gardner, one of Australia's most recognized television news presenters, will leave Nine Network next month after 24 years, with her final bulletin confirmed for April 17, 2026.

A 24-Year Career Across Every Daypart at Nine

Gardner joined Nine in 2002 as a weather presenter and morning news reader. She moved to the Today Show in 2007 as a newsreader and occasional host, a role she held for seven years.

Why Australia's TV Broadcasters Are Losing Share of Growing Ad Spend
Nine Entertainment's profit margins collapse as Australia's growing ad market bypasses broadcast TV for digital and retail channels. TV ad revenue fell 8.7% in 2025 while retail media surged 28.1%.

In 2009, she was appointed anchor of 9News Sydney's 6pm weekend bulletin, a position she held for 17 years. According to Nine's Executive Director of News and Current Affairs, Fiona Dear, Gardner held "almost every on-air news role at Nine" during her tenure.

Gardner announced her departure via Instagram on approximately March 13, 2026. "I could not be more grateful for the range of opportunities Nine has afforded me over nearly a quarter of a century," she said in a statement.

Dear praised Gardner's contribution, saying: "Georgie's professionalism and composure during breaking news events makes her one of the most talented newsreaders in the country." Dear confirmed the network's full support for Gardner's exit.

Departure Coincides with Nine2028 Organizational Restructure

Gardner's exit follows Nine's Nine2028 transformation program, which took effect July 1, 2025. The restructure unified Channel 9, 9Now, and Stan under a single Managing Director, Amanda Laing, for the first time. Hamish Turner was appointed Executive Director for Channel 9, its multi-channels, and 9Now as part of the same reorganization.

The restructure also centralized state operations, with Managing Directors in Queensland, Western Australia, and South Australia now reporting directly to Laing. Nine has not publicly named a replacement for Gardner's weekend bulletin role.

The network has separately invested in AI tools including 9Galaxy+ and 9Predict, designed to manage cross-platform advertising and forecast audience behavior, respectively.

Nine's Strategic Focus Shifts Toward Sports Rights and Streaming

Nine holds exclusive Olympic Games broadcasting rights spanning Paris 2024 through Brisbane 2032, alongside rights to the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The network's streaming arm Stan continues to operate under Dan Taylor with full profit-and-loss accountability under the Nine2028 structure.

Gardner's 35-day transition window between her announcement and final bulletin reflects a controlled approach to managing audience expectations during the changeover. No successor has been confirmed at the time of publication.

Gardner's final bulletin airs April 17, 2026, on 9News Sydney.
