Independent Ad Data Is Moving Inside Buying Platforms

Infillion’s Foursquare acquisition combines location signals with Catalina purchase data and media execution. The tighter stack may improve offline attribution, but CMOs need contract terms that preserve data access, methodological scrutiny and independent checks for accountability.

Independent Ad Data Is Moving Inside Buying Platforms

Infillion announced on September 18 that it will acquire Foursquare, bringing the location-intelligence company into an advertising platform that already owns MediaMath and purchase-data specialist Catalina. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal gives Infillion access to a database covering more than 100 million points of interest across 200 countries, 16 billion human-verified check-ins and aggregated coverage of 250 million US devices. Infillion says it can combine those signals with media execution and Catalina purchase data to measure whether advertising drove store visits and sales.

That promise matters because the deal joins three functions that marketers often buy separately: campaign activation, location attribution and purchase measurement. The convenience is clear. So is the governance question for CMOs when the platform optimizing spend also owns more of the evidence used to judge it.

What Infillion Is Buying

Foursquare began as a consumer check-in app in 2009, but its commercial value now sits in place data and location measurement. AdExchanger reported that Apple Maps, Uber, Snapchat, Spotify and major agency holding companies use its services.

Infillion founder and executive chairman Rob Emrich said, “Walled gardens and retailer apps can only measure what happens inside their own environments.” The acquisition is intended to offer a broader view of physical behaviour, including where people went after an ad exposure.

Foursquare is expected to keep its brand and continue selling data to customers using competing platforms. That detail is strategically important. The asset becomes more valuable to Infillion if it strengthens its own buying stack, but marketers and rival platforms will also care whether access, pricing and methodology remain consistent after ownership changes.

The Value Is In Joining Visits To Purchases

Infillion acquired Catalina in February. Catalina says its network covers 70 retail banners, 130 million households, US$600 billion in annual spending and 11 billion shopping trips a year. Foursquare adds the location layer: Catalina can indicate what was bought, while Foursquare can help identify where a consumer went.

Connecting those records to campaign delivery could shorten the path from exposure to outcome and support optimization against store visits or verified sales. It may also reduce the work agencies spend reconciling separate vendors.

But a closed loop is still a supplier claim until buyers understand the match rates, consent basis, geographic coverage and incrementality method underneath it. CMOs should ask which outcomes are observed, which are modelled, how unmatched audiences are handled and whether lift is tested against a credible control group.

Rivals Are Buying Evidence Too

Infillion is part of a wider consolidation push. Nielsen agreed in August to buy DoubleVerify for about US$2.15 billion, combining audience measurement with media-quality verification. Viant announced a US$40 million deal for TVision in April to place attention signals inside programmatic TV buying.

The common direction is toward platforms that connect planning, activation, verification and outcomes. Infillion’s distinction is its emphasis on physical-world evidence through visitation and retail purchase data. It also exposes the same structural tension: measurement can become faster and more actionable when it sits beside buying, but less independent if the boundaries are weak.

For APAC leaders, global scale should not be confused with equal local depth. Foursquare cites points of interest across 200 countries, while the device coverage disclosed in the announcement is US-specific. Regional CMOs should require market-level documentation for panel size, place accuracy, privacy controls and outcome availability before using one global methodology across Asia.

What CMOs Should Put In The Contract

The immediate decision is not whether to reject integrated platforms. It is how to buy them without losing leverage. Contracts should preserve raw-data exports, methodology documentation, change notifications, audit rights and the ability to use an independent measurement partner.

Marketing leaders should also separate optimization metrics from board-level proof. A platform may use visit or sales signals to improve bids in real time, while finance and procurement rely on periodic independent tests to validate incremental value.

Infillion’s Foursquare deal suggests that proprietary evidence is becoming a competitive asset in ad tech. CMOs can benefit from the tighter workflow, but only if the data remains portable and the party moving the budget is not the only party grading the result.
