Micro-Drama Growth Is Becoming A Distribution Fight
ReelShort has pushed into Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand through telco partnerships. The move shows why micro-drama growth is shifting from paid acquisition toward distribution economics, billing access and local audience reach.
ReelShort has expanded its vertical micro-drama distribution across Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand, according to MARKETECH APAC on September 28. The latest launches with Singtel CAST and Telkomsel extend earlier deals with Globe and AIS, giving the platform a four-market telecom distribution network built in roughly six months.
Distribution Is Starting To Change The Unit Economics
The immediate story is reach. ScreenMDM reports that Singtel, Telkomsel, Globe and AIS together represent more than 275 million mobile connections. For ReelShort, that means access to audiences through operators that already own the customer relationship, billing channel and mobile service experience.
The more important shift is acquisition cost. Media Partners Asia, cited by Variety, expects ReelShort's user acquisition and marketing costs to fall from 55% of revenue in 2025 to 44% by 2028. The research firm says telco distribution can add subscribers at almost no acquisition cost, while every percentage point of lower marketing spend is worth roughly US$10.5 million of EBITDA at the company's projected 2026 scale.

Southeast Asia Is Becoming A Test Market For The Model
The region matters because mobile-first viewing is already deep and the micro-drama category is scaling quickly. MARKETECH APAC says the four markets covered by ReelShort's operator partnerships account for close to 70% of Southeast Asia's population. The same report cites 56% year-on-year growth in micro-drama consumption in Thailand.
Indonesia adds another layer. Deadline reported in August that Indonesia accounted for 39% of Asia-Pacific short-form drama audiences, while ReelShort also struck a distribution and co-production deal with Vidio. That means its Indonesian strategy is not tied to one route to market. It can test direct telco distribution, streaming aggregation and local production at the same time.

Telcos Get Content While Platforms Get A Cheaper Path To Users
The exchange is commercially straightforward. Operators get differentiated entertainment that can sit inside existing mobile products, while content platforms gain distribution without relying only on paid social advertising or app-store discovery. Telkomsel's Kemas M. Fadhli said the partnership is intended to make ReelShort's mobile-first stories easier for Indonesian customers to access, while ReelShort founder Joey Jia described the regional strategy as focused on markets where mobile entertainment is accelerating fastest.
That does not make telecom distribution automatically superior. The economics depend on revenue share, billing terms, promotion commitments, customer data access and whether users acquired through a bundle remain engaged after the initial offer. Those details are exactly where media and growth leaders should focus.
The Competitive Question Is Moving Beyond Content Volume
ReelShort is already the largest player in the category by revenue share, with MPA estimating a 29% global share. As competitors add more titles, the harder advantage may come from who secures the best local distribution, billing relationships and co-production partners.
For media executives, telcos and growth leaders, the practical decision is how much of the next audience-growth budget should still go into paid acquisition versus distribution partnerships. The key measures should include subscriber acquisition cost, activation, retention, revenue share, billing conversion, content usage and the amount of first-party audience insight each partner retains. If those economics hold, micro-drama may become less of an app-marketing race and more of a distribution network business.
