R/GA Returns for Fourth Year as Blak Powerhouse Creative Partner

R/GA's four-year partnership with Blak Powerhouse shows how agencies build sustained cultural credibility beyond one-off sponsorships. A model CMOs should study.

R/GA Returns for Fourth Year as Blak Powerhouse Creative Partner

Global agency R/GA has returned for its fourth consecutive year as creative partner for Blak Powerhouse, a free First Nations cultural celebration held on January 26 at Manning House, University of Sydney. The agency collaborated with We Are Warriors founder Nooky and Wiradjuri/Ngiyampaa artist Matthew "Melnunnie" Brettschneider to develop the 2026 visual identity for the event.

The partnership represents a sustained multi-year commitment to Indigenous arts programming rather than a one-off sponsorship activation. Blak Powerhouse now enters its fifth year alongside We Are Warriors' fifth anniversary, positioning the event as an established fixture in Australia's cultural calendar.

Visual Identity Draws From Ancestral Language

This year's design centers on the theme "Welcome," incorporating symbols representing a person sitting and collective gathering drawn from ancestral visual language. The "Welcome" wordmark was redesigned to resemble a wry smile, carrying dual meaning as both invitation and a symbol of survival and resistance.

How Volvo Used a Fake Brand to Reclaim 'Safety' in Malaysia's EV Market
Grey Malaysia created mystery brand 'Selamat' for Volvo's ES90 launch, using a 7-day teaser with camouflaged vehicles to reclaim safety positioning in Malaysia's crowded EV market.

"Country doesn't mean Australia. Country means your land, your mob, your spirit, and your ancestors," Nooky explained in statements about the event. The design functions as a visual manifestation of safe passage, reflecting cultural protection alongside community celebration.

The event features ARIA award winners BAARKA, rap collective 3%, rapper Ziggy Ramo, R&B vocalist Mi-Kaisha, and hip-hop duo Birdz & Fred Leone. Beyond musical performances, attendees can access dance performances, panel discussions, weaving workshops, art installations, and First Nations market stalls.

Immersive Zones Replace Traditional Event Layouts

The venue includes immersive zones called "Nooky's Backyard" and the "Aretha Brown Tattoo Parlour Zone," with a dedicated Birthday Room marking We Are Warriors' five-year milestone. The event opens with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Aunty Nadeena Dixon, hosted by Nooky and DJ Soju Gang.

Powerhouse Chief Executive Lisa Havila stated the event is "shaped by community, led by First Nations voices and grounded in deep cultural practice," inviting attendees to experience what organizers describe as authentic Blak excellence and solidarity.

Partnership Model Extends Beyond Single Activations

R/GA's four-year involvement with Blak Powerhouse reflects a broader shift in how agencies approach cultural partnerships in Asia-Pacific markets. Rather than treating Indigenous arts support as annual corporate social responsibility checkboxes, the sustained collaboration allows for deeper integration between creative expertise and cultural programming.

The partnership structure enables consistent visual identity development while maintaining community leadership. We Are Warriors and Powerhouse retain creative direction while R/GA provides design execution and brand development resources year over year.

The all-ages event remains free to attend, removing financial barriers to First Nations cultural participation. This accessibility component distinguishes the programming from commercial festivals or ticketed cultural events, prioritizing community access over revenue generation.

The timing on January 26 deliberately reframes the date into what organizers describe as one of "power, pride, and positivity" for First Nations communities, offering an alternative cultural narrative to traditional Australia Day commemorations.
