SMU Launches Singapore's First Gen AI Diploma for SME Leaders
Singapore's first Gen AI diploma trains non-technical SME leaders in LLMs and governance. SMU Academy partners with ASME to build 'AI Bilingualists' without coding.
Singapore Management University (SMU) Academy has introduced the country's first Industry Graduate Diploma in Generative AI, Large Language Models and AI Governance, designed specifically for non-technical business professionals in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The program, developed in partnership with the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) and Straits Interactive, opened for registration this month and will launch later this year.
Training "AI Bilingualists" Without Programming Requirements
The diploma aims to create what organizers call "AI Bilingualists", professionals who can bridge business strategy and AI implementation while emphasizing governance and responsible use. No programming expertise is required to enroll.
The stackable program comprises two Advanced Certificates. The first covers Generative AI, Ethics and Data Protection, while the second focuses on Gen AI Apps Design and Prompt Engineering. The curriculum targets business functions including customer service, compliance, human resources, learning and development, and marketing.
To complete the diploma, participants must pass an overall examination plus either design and implement an AI solution for a real business challenge through an Integrated Learning Project, or attend 16 enrichment workshops and networking sessions. This applied component distinguishes the program by linking learning with practical, work-based outcomes.
Government-Backed Push for SME AI Capabilities
The initiative reflects Singapore's broader push to accelerate AI adoption among SMEs, which often face resource constraints in developing technical capabilities. Each partner brings specific expertise to the collaboration. ASME provides SME network access, SMU Academy handles course delivery, and Straits Interactive contributes data protection and AI governance experience.

"For SMEs, AI adoption is no longer optional, it is a competitiveness imperative," said ASME President Ang Yuit in a statement, emphasizing the program's focus on translating AI skills into real business capability grounded in governance.
The program incorporates Kevin Shepherdson's book "AI Factory: AI Capability Guide for SMEs" as a learning resource. It also connects to SMU's Industry Practise Master of Digital Economy and includes credit exemption pathways for polytechnic post-diploma holders, expanding access for professionals without traditional university degrees.
Addressing Urgent Workforce Development Needs
The diploma launch comes as regional businesses accelerate tech adoption, including generative AI tools. By targeting non-technical business professionals, the program addresses a critical gap in workforce development, where understanding AI governance and practical implementation matters as much as technical expertise.
The hands-on approach, requiring either a real business project or extensive workshop participation, ensures graduates can immediately apply their learning to actual business challenges. This practical focus distinguishes the diploma from purely theoretical AI education programs.
Registration details and program schedules are available through SMU Academy.
