TBWA Greater China's Succession Test Comes at a Critical Time

TBWA Greater China CEO Joanne Lao will step down by the end of 2026 and return to Hong Kong after 11 years based in Shanghai, the agency announced on November 5. A successor has not been named, and TBWA says it will provide details of its future leadership structure shortly.

The departure creates a significant handover for a Greater China business that has operated under the same senior leader through changes in Chinese consumer culture, creative production and agency organization. For clients, the immediate question is who will carry strategic relationships and decision-making authority into the next phase.

An Agency Leader Exits With Succession Unresolved Lao's career with the network has spanned Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China. The agency credited her with strengthening integrated capabilities, creative output and client relationships in Greater China, and pointed to TBWA Group China's recognition as Campaign's China Creative Agency of the Year in December 2025.

In the announcement carried by Campaign Brief Asia, Lao said "the time is right for me to return to Hong Kong". Sean Donovan, president of Omnicom Advertising Asia, praised her work in developing "strong businesses, trusted client relationships and talented teams". The company attributed the move to her desire to be closer to family.

That distinction matters. The wider holding group has undergone substantial organizational change, but the available reporting does not establish that restructuring prompted her departure. The succession process still needs to explain the operating model that follows.

The Handover Lands During Wider Network Change In December 2025, [Marketing-Interactive reported](https://www.marketing-interactive.com/tbwa-leadership-gc-sg-my-unchanged-amid-omnicom-ipg-merger) that TBWA's Greater China, Singapore and Malaysia leadership teams would remain in place following the Omnicom-Interpublic combination. Lao was then identified as Greater China CEO, overseeing a complex network of offices and businesses. Her newly announced departure changes one important part of that continuity picture.

Separately, Omnicom appointed Andrew Robertson chief executive of Omnicom Advertising in September 2026 as Troy Ruhanen prepared to retire. The group describes BBDO, McCann and TBWA as the core creative networks of its integrated advertising operation. Regional leaders must therefore balance global network coordination with client-specific accountability in individual markets.

Mission Media has also reported on Omnicom Advertising Asia's six-person regional leadership team, established under Donovan across disciplines including creativity, innovation, strategy and growth. That structure gives the regional group more shared expertise, but does not answer who will lead TBWA's Greater China relationships on the ground.

Client Continuity Is The Business Test A change at this level affects more than an organizational chart. Large advertisers buying integrated work in China need clear owners for budgets, creative approvals, local cultural judgment and cross-border briefs. Those responsibilities can be distributed across a network, but ambiguity about final authority is costly when campaigns or client negotiations move quickly.

The decision for Omnicom Advertising's Asia leadership is therefore how to divide responsibilities between the incoming Greater China leader and the regional functional team. An internal promotion may emphasize continuity; an outside appointment might introduce a different commercial mandate. Neither outcome has been announced, and both remain possibilities rather than confirmed plans.

Agency competitors may use a leadership transition to approach client relationships, while TBWA can use a structured handover to demonstrate that its creative and account capabilities extend beyond one executive. Which advantage prevails depends on execution, not the announcement itself.

Omnicom Advertising Asia Names Six Regional Leaders to Unify Creative Networks
Omnicom Advertising Asia consolidates creative and strategy functions under six regional leaders reporting to President Sean Donovan, unifying TBWA, McCann, and BBDO networks across Asia-Pacific.

What Regional Agency Leaders Should Watch The next disclosure is the succession plan: the named leader, effective transition date, reporting lines, and any changes to account responsibilities. Those details will show whether the handover preserves local authority or shifts more decisions into the regional network.

For agency CEOs and chief marketing officers, the practical lesson is to assess continuity at the level of client teams and decision rights. TBWA's immediate task is to make its Greater China leadership transition legible to customers while maintaining the creative culture it credits Lao with building.
