TikTok Shop Exits Australia as Southeast Asia GMV Doubles

TikTok Shop confirms no Australia launch despite Southeast Asia GMV doubling in 2025. Australian brands like HiSmile generate millions selling overseas while domestic consumers wait.

TikTok Shop Exits Australia as Southeast Asia GMV Doubles

TikTok Shop has confirmed it has no plans to launch in Australia, even as the platform's social commerce operation across Southeast Asia more than doubled in gross merchandise value in 2025. The confirmation came from Amy Bradshaw, GM Global Business Solutions for TikTok ANZ, at the platform's Spotlight event in Sydney in late 2025.

TikTok ANZ Leadership Confirms No Launch Timeline

Bradshaw stated at the Sydney event that TikTok ANZ has "no awareness of launch plans for Australia" regarding TikTok Shop. The confirmation places Australia outside TikTok's near-term commerce rollout, despite the country having 8.5 million active TikTok users.

TikTok Launches Radio Network With 25 Creator-Hosted Podcasts
TikTok Radio debuts across 28 U.S. stations with 25 creator-hosted podcasts, signaling how social platforms are formalizing broadcast infrastructure. CMOs should watch this platform convergence model already scaling in Asia.

The announcement came at TikTok's flagship Australian brand event, where the platform also unveiled two new ad formats: Prime Time, which allows up to three sequential video ads within a 15-minute window, and Logo Takeover, a co-branded format that transitions to a full-screen ad. Neither format constitutes a commerce launch.

Bradshaw noted at the same event: "Australian success stories like HiSmile and EHP Labs show what's possible when brands fully embrace TikTok Shop overseas."

Australian Brands Sell on TikTok Shop Everywhere Except Home

Nearly 20 Australian businesses are currently using TikTok Shop to sell in the US and UK markets. Personal care brand HiSmile generated over US$2.67 million in gross merchandise value through TikTok Shop in those markets in 2025, with reported sales uplifts exceeding 1,000%. Supplement brand EHP Labs earned more than US$350,000 in incremental sales during the 2025 Cyber Weekend through TikTok Shop campaigns run exclusively in overseas markets.

Both brands access TikTok Shop's commerce infrastructure abroad while Australian consumers have no equivalent domestic access.

In the UK, TikTok Shop recorded 27 items sold every second during Black Friday 2025. Cyber Week sales exceeded the prior year's record by 50%.

Southeast Asia Emerges as TikTok Shop's Commerce Heartland

TikTok Shop's Southeast Asia operation recorded more than 100% GMV growth year-on-year in 2025, with average daily GMV rising 90% over the same period. During the 2025 12.12 promotional event, GMV surged 2.7 times compared to 2024, with short video sales GMV increasing 257%.

TikTok Shop now commands more than 40% of Vietnam's e-commerce market. Across all core Southeast Asia product categories, GMV growth exceeded 120% in 2025. Computer and office equipment grew nearly five times year-on-year.

Six of TikTok Shop's seven global sites are located in Southeast Asia. The platform's 2026 merchant development program, called the "Billion-Level Leading Group," supports leading sellers in building international brand presence across those markets.

Infrastructure Gap Explains Australia's Exclusion

No regulatory barriers specific to Australia have been identified in relation to TikTok Shop's absence. The delay is attributed to operational requirements: local logistics infrastructure, fulfillment partnerships, payment integrations, and an established seller network. These systems are in place across Southeast Asia and the UK but remain undeveloped in Australia.

Meanwhile, competing platforms are consolidating their positions in Australian retail. Amazon Australia has 8.8 million active shoppers, with 66% of Australian consumers planning to purchase through the platform. Trust perceptions for Temu improved 50% year-on-year among Australian shoppers, while Shein rose 36% over the same period.

Pattern's 2026 Marketplace Consumer Report identifies social platforms as "a central pillar of modern product discovery," adding that brands investing in "creator-led content and seamless in-platform shopping will be best positioned." Australian brands currently cannot execute that model domestically through TikTok Shop.

No launch timeline for TikTok Shop in Australia has been announced. TikTok's Spotlight Sydney event indicated the platform is deepening its Australian advertising relationships, but commerce infrastructure development remains unconfirmed.
