AI Answers Are Moving From Publisher Sites To Phone Lockscreens
Taboola is taking its publisher-powered DeeperDive AI answers to Motorola smartphone lockscreens. The move could give news content a new discovery route, but leaves major questions about referral traffic, attribution, advertising terms and the publisher relationship unanswered.
Taboola and Motorola announced on October 28 that the DeeperDive AI answer engine will become accessible from the lockscreens of selected moto g smartphones. The planned rollout spans 2026 and 2027 and includes seven named markets in Europe and Latin America.
DeeperDive answers questions using publisher content and suggests related reporting. Until now, its principal proposition has been to help news organisations answer reader questions within their own digital properties. Motorola's integration moves that interaction onto a device surface users encounter before opening a news app or browser.
That gives the partnership significance beyond another AI feature. It potentially changes who introduces readers to journalism, who measures subsequent visits and who controls the first interaction.
Discovery Moves Ahead Of The Publisher Website
The October 28 announcement says users will be able to ask about sports, finance, travel and other subjects from the lockscreen, then follow suggested stories and related topics. The companies have an existing relationship providing personalised recommendations on selected moto g devices.
DeeperDive already has a measurable on-site audience. In April 2026, Taboola reported nearly seven million monthly active users and more than ten million reader questions per month across its publisher integrations. These are company-reported figures from the website product, not evidence of future smartphone adoption.
Taboola CEO Adam Singolda described the partnership as a way to help people explore interests through publisher-informed answers. The operational change is that readers may now encounter that answer without first choosing a particular publisher.

The Referral Economics Are Still Unclear
The initial Motorola announcement does not specify how many devices will carry the tool, how it will be enabled, which outlets supply information to the lockscreen version or where users will land after selecting a story. It also does not disclose advertising, revenue-sharing or data-handling terms for the device integration.
Those omissions matter because the original on-site model could keep discovery, recirculation and advertising opportunities within a participating publisher's property. A device-level answer layer introduces another party between an information request and the outlet that produced the reporting.
Publishers evaluating similar distribution deals will need to distinguish an answer impression from a referred reader. The commercial test should include attributable visits, content usage rights, engagement and the treatment of questions generated outside their owned channels.

Taboola Is Expanding Its Role In Media Distribution
The device partnership follows other moves beyond conventional article recommendations. In August, Axios reported that NBC News had selected Taboola to handle global programmatic display advertising sales across its digital properties, extending a long-running native advertising relationship.
Motorola adds a different distribution surface. Taboola's position could expand from monetising traffic that reaches publisher websites to influencing how users encounter publishers in the first place. Yet the lockscreen agreement does not establish that a new advertising inventory or monetisation product will accompany DeeperDive.
That distinction limits the conclusions advertisers can draw today. An accessible interface is a potential source of attention, but its value as media depends on actual adoption, user controls and credible reporting on outcomes.

APAC Publishers Have A Reason To Watch, Not Assume
The seven named rollout markets are the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Mexico and Argentina. No APAC smartphone market is specifically announced. Still, Taboola identifies Bangkok Post and BuzzFeed Asia among existing DeeperDive publisher users, giving the region a direct interest in how content moves between on-site tools and device surfaces.
The company also announced publisher partnerships in the Philippines with GMA Network, Philstar Global and Manila Bulletin in October, covering recommendation, engagement and monetisation products. Those agreements should not be mistaken for participation in the new Motorola rollout.
For APAC media executives, the immediate decision is contractual rather than technical. Before extending content or audience partnerships to device-level AI interfaces, ask who controls answer sourcing, reader referrals, consent and reporting. The competitive advantage will depend less on appearing on a lockscreen than on whether that appearance creates measurable value for the publisher.
