Dentsu's Kazuhiro Shimura Named Innovation Lions Jury President at Cannes 2026

Dentsu Inc. has announced that Kazuhiro Shimura, Executive Creative Director at the Japanese advertising group, will serve as Jury President for the Innovation Lions category at Cannes Lions 2026. The festival runs June 22 to 26, 2026.

The appointment was confirmed on the official Cannes Lions site on February 3, 2026, as part of the full 2026 jury president lineup announcement.

Shimura's Background Spans Technology, Science, and Advertising

Shimura leads Dentsu's Future Creative Center, where his work focuses on AI-driven creativity and innovation that combines technology, data, and business to address real-world problems.

His academic background is in biotechnology. That scientific training underpins projects like TUNA SCOPE, described as the world's first AI system for assessing tuna quality at auction. The project was developed with the Japanese government and global industry partners to address supply chain challenges in the seafood sector.

Shimura also contributed to Toyota's mobility innovation team, working on the i-ROAD, an ultra-compact three-wheeled electric vehicle, and related urban mobility services.

He has received recognition across more than 10 major global award programs, including Cannes Lions, D&AD, The One Show, Clio Awards, and Spikes Asia. He has previously served as a juror at Cannes Lions, D&AD, The One Show, Spikes Asia, and ADFEST.

As Dentsu noted in its announcement, Cannes Lions awards "are now valued not only for celebrating creative work but also as an opportunity for industry professionals to understand and grasp the latest business trends at a glance."

Five APAC Jury Presidents Confirmed for Cannes Lions 2026

Shimura is one of five Asia-Pacific-based jury presidents confirmed for Cannes Lions 2026. The group includes Sindhuja Rai (Media) and Kazoo Sato (Sustainable Development Goals), among others.

This concentration of Asian creative leadership at the jury level reflects broader recognition of the region's output. Ogilvy Singapore ranked sixth worldwide and was named APAC Agency of the Year in The One Club's 2025 Global Creative Rankings. The agency also received Asia Network of the Year at the 2025 London International Awards.

Campaign Brief Asia's 2025 Creative Rankings recognized 2,886 individual creatives across Asia in major global programs.

Cannes Lions 2026 Expands Into AI and Systemic Creativity

The 2026 festival introduces several structural changes that align with Shimura's professional focus. New AI Craft subcategories will be added across five disciplines: Design, Digital Craft, Film Craft, Industry Craft, and Creative Data.

The festival also introduces the Creative Brand Lion, a new category recognizing brands that embed creativity across their entire organization for long-term business growth, rather than rewarding individual campaigns. The Creative Data Lion has also been updated to position data as a core idea driver rather than a measurement tool.

The Innovation Lions category itself focuses on work that demonstrates game-changing, systemic impact through technology and creativity combined.
