Mumbrella360 Phishing Scam Targets APAC Marketing Pros

A phishing campaign impersonating Mumbrella is circulating across the Asia-Pacific marketing and communications industry, offering fraudulent complimentary tickets to the Mumbrella360 conference scheduled for May 2026.

Mumbrella has officially confirmed the emails are not authentic and has reported the matter to the ACCC's ScamWatch service.

Fraudulent Emails Confirmed by Mumbrella

The fraudulent emails carry the subject line "Your Complimentary Mumbrella360 Ticket" and appear to originate from "The Mumbrella Team." Mumbrella confirmed it has been contacted by numerous recipients asking whether the offer is legitimate.

It is not.

Mumbrella advises all recipients to avoid clicking any links, report the email as spam, block the sender, and delete the message immediately.

The scam uses a proven lure: offering free access to a premium industry event. This incentive-based approach is consistent with documented phishing patterns across APAC, where trusted brand names are used to lower the defenses of professional audiences.

A Pattern of Brand Impersonation Across the Region

The Mumbrella360 scam mirrors a documented and accelerating pattern of fraud targeting professional communities across Asia-Pacific.

Singapore Police Love Scam Video Hits 211K Likes With Viral Campaign
Singapore's Hougang Police deployed visual misdirection to warn about online romance scams, generating 211K likes. The campaign highlights a $24.9M loss problem for marketers targeting vulnerable audiences.

Scam attempts rose 35% across APAC as part of a 65% global increase, with financial fraud in the region rising 78% over the same period. Identity fraud doubled in Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Cambodia between 2021 and 2023. Across the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia, 39% of households reported exposure to digital crime.

Singapore Airlines was previously impersonated through fraudulent Facebook advertisements, resulting in payment data theft from customers. Singtel was impersonated via SMS in 2024, with over A$100,000 stolen from victims directed to fake redemption sites.

WPP CEO Mark Read was targeted by scammers using voice cloning technology and publicly available video footage to construct a fake meeting designed to solicit funds. The attempt was unsuccessful, but WPP issued warnings to its leadership team.

Deepfake Fraud Raises the Financial Stakes

The financial consequences of executive impersonation fraud in APAC have escalated sharply. Engineering firm Arup lost US$25 million after employees were deceived by a fake video call featuring a deepfake CFO. A Singapore multinational lost US$499,000 in 2025 via fake video calls impersonating company executives.

Business email compromise fraud, which deceives staff into taking financial actions by mimicking executive communications, is forecast to grow across APAC. Singapore alone recorded SG$19 million (~US$14 million) in such losses as far back as 2016, with a 20% annual growth rate in reported cases.

APAC's structural vulnerabilities compound the risk. High consumer trust in SMS communications, fragmented data protection regulations, and rapid mobile adoption across key markets create conditions that fraudsters actively exploit.
