OpenAI Appoints Jennifer Lien as APAC Marketing Head

OpenAI has appointed Jennifer Lien as Head of Marketing for Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore. The hire signals a shift from limited regional presence to a structured, full-scale commercial operation across consumer, enterprise, and public sector markets.

Lien's Role and Near-Term Priorities

Lien will oversee marketing across consumer and business segments, covering brand development, user growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, and market-specific strategies. Her primary objective is ensuring OpenAI is "meaningfully understood and adopted" at scale throughout the region.

In her first six to 12 months, Lien plans to build a regional team with deep local expertise and develop market-by-market strategies. She has stated that "success comes from combining global ambition with local precision," acknowledging that APAC's diverse markets require tailored approaches rather than a single regional playbook.

Success will be measured across growth, engagement, trust, and tangible outcomes. As Lien put it: "Strong metrics matter, but building durable relevance matters even more."

A Deliberate Hire With Cross-Platform Credentials

Lien joins from Figma, where she served as Director of Marketing for JAPAC from 2023 to 2025. Her prior experience includes senior marketing roles at Facebook, LinkedIn, Google, and YouTube, spanning both consumer and business marketing across Asian markets.

This hiring pattern reflects a deliberate strategy. OpenAI is recruiting executives who have scaled both consumer and enterprise products simultaneously across diverse Asian markets, a model used by the major platform companies where Lien previously worked.

Lien also challenges the traditional split between "mature" and "emerging" markets. She argues that readiness, ambition, and adoption speed matter more than conventional labels. Markets with mobile-first behaviors and fewer legacy systems may leapfrog traditional adoption curves, a framing with direct implications for how OpenAI allocates marketing investment across Southeast Asia, India, Australia, and Singapore.

OpenAI's Broader APAC Build-Out

Lien's appointment is part of a wider regional expansion. Grace Chua was named Head of Communications for Singapore and Southeast Asia in May 2025, adding a dedicated communications layer to OpenAI's Singapore hub.

Kiran Mani has been appointed as OpenAI's APAC Managing Director, with a confirmed start date of June 2026. His remit covers commercial strategy, partnerships, enterprise engagement, public sector relations, and developer ecosystems across India, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Mani's background includes the role of APAC Managing Director for Android and Google Play at Google, along with senior positions at JioStar, Microsoft, and IBM. He will report directly to Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon.

OpenAI also opened its first Australian office in December 2024, establishing a second physical anchor market alongside Singapore. In India, former Meta executive Sheeladitya Mohanty has been appointed as India Marketing Lead, with an open Consumer Marketing Manager role also posted for the market.

Competitive Context for AI Marketing Talent

OpenAI's regional hiring is taking place within an active talent market. Kore.ai is recruiting a Director of Field and Ecosystem Marketing for APAC. Heidi Health is building a dedicated APAC marketing function targeting business demand generation across Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. Intrepid Asia recently appointed a Regional Head of Performance Marketing for Southeast Asia with an explicit AI and automation mandate.

OpenAI is therefore competing not only for AI product market share but for senior marketing talent with APAC-specific AI commercialization experience.

Kiran Mani is scheduled to begin his role as APAC Managing Director in June 2026, adding commercial leadership to the marketing and communications structure OpenAI has been building across the region.
