Search Ads Are Moving Into The Messaging Inbox
Google is moving Search leads into verified RCS threads where AI can answer questions and qualify prospects. For CMOs, the opportunity comes with a harder decision: who controls consent, customer data and the handoff from paid media to sales across regional markets.
Google used its August 11 Marketing Live event in India to present Message Ads with RCS for Business, a format that moves people from a Search ad into a verified text conversation where Google AI can answer questions and qualify leads.
The launch extends paid search beyond traffic acquisition. Google is offering to keep the prospect inside a platform-managed journey after the click, covering the first exchange that would normally sit with a landing page, contact centre or sales team.
What Google Put After The Search Click
Google says the format can “move people smoothly from a Search Ad to a verified text thread.” The thread uses an official brand profile rather than an unidentified phone number, while the AI is positioned to respond around the clock and continue nurturing the lead after the browser tab closes.
The company describes one benefit as “Connect Beyond the Browser.” That matters because lead-generation performance has often been divided between the media team that buys intent, the web team that manages the landing experience and the sales team that follows up. Message Ads compress those steps into one conversation.
RCS also supports richer interactions than SMS, including branded profiles, product browsing and read receipts. Google Messages documentation says registered businesses can display a verified check mark, name, logo and description, giving the format more visible trust cues than a conventional text.

Messaging Is Becoming Part Of Media Buying
Google is not creating this category alone. Meta already runs ads that open conversations in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, and in May introduced Business AI on WhatsApp for eligible small businesses in India.
Meta cited Kantar research showing that 91% of online adults in India chat with a business each week. The competitive question is therefore less about whether consumers will use messaging and more about which platform controls discovery, qualification and follow-up.
Google’s advantage is the Search trigger. It can connect an expressed query to an ongoing thread without requiring a separate messaging app relationship. Meta’s advantage is the established behaviour and commercial infrastructure around WhatsApp. For CMOs, both models blur the boundary between paid media, conversational commerce and customer relationship management.

India Makes Trust And Consent The Product Test
India is an important market for this launch because business messaging is already widespread and spam risk is highly visible. In March, Google and Bharti Airtel announced additional RCS protections, including telco-backed sender checks, network and device signals, URL threat analysis and rate limits for low-reputation senders.
Those controls do not remove the governance question. Google Messages states that verified business RCS chats “aren’t end-to-end encrypted,” and that businesses, messaging providers and carriers may access content for delivery and other purposes. India-specific consent controls also allow users to decline a business conversation and move it into spam.
That makes trust part of campaign design, not a technical footnote. Regional marketing leaders need to know what the AI may say, how consent is recorded, where transcripts are stored and when a person takes over.
What CMOs Need To Decide Before Scaling
The immediate opportunity is faster response to high-intent leads. The larger decision is whether the convenience of a platform-managed conversation justifies moving another customer touchpoint inside Google’s infrastructure.
Before scaling, CMOs should require a shared operating model across media, CRM, sales, legal and customer service. It should define approved knowledge sources, escalation rules, retention periods, country-level consent requirements and the event that counts as a qualified lead.
Measurement also needs to follow the conversation rather than stop at the click. A cheaper lead is not necessarily a better lead if qualification logic, duplicate handling or sales acceptance remains opaque.
Google’s RCS format suggests that paid search is becoming an entry point to managed dialogue, not simply a route to a website. Marketing leaders should test the channel only with clear ownership of the conversation that follows.
