Search Automation Is Becoming A Campaign Governance Test

Microsoft’s AI Max rollout makes search automation portable across platforms and campaign defaults. For CMOs, the decision is no longer only whether AI improves conversion, but who governs imported settings, generated copy, query expansion and landing-page routing across markets.

Search Automation Is Becoming A Campaign Governance Test

Microsoft Advertising made AI Max available to all search advertisers on August 27, adding AI-led search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion to standard campaigns. The release also includes reporting, brand controls and term exclusions intended to show where automation changes queries, creative and landing-page selection.

The immediate pitch is broader reach and better performance. The more consequential issue for CMOs is that these settings can travel between platforms and become defaults, allowing an automation choice made in one account to shape another market before a regional team has reviewed it.

What AI Max Changes

Microsoft said average US query length across Bing and AI-powered chat increased 14% from the first to the second quarter of 2026. Its system uses keywords, ads, landing pages and other signals to match longer or conversational searches, generate additional copy and route users to the page it considers most relevant.

The company reported a roughly 13.6% spend-weighted conversion uplift across 44 advertiser-run A/B tests conducted globally from June to August. Ten experiments recorded statistically significant gains in conversions or conversion value, with an 8.2% lower confidence bound. Those are vendor figures, but the test design is more useful than a broad before-and-after claim because budgets and bid strategies were held constant.

BBQGuys said the tool “captured high-intent customers that our current Search settings would have missed.” The practical value is access to demand that manual keyword lists may not anticipate. The trade-off is that query selection, message generation and destination routing now sit inside the same automated decision.

Campaign Portability Now Carries Policy

Microsoft has added an “AI optimised” match label, asset reporting and a report showing which landing page received each search term. Existing negative keywords, budgets, conversion goals and targeting remain in place, while brand inclusions, brand exclusions and creative term exclusions add further controls.

“Using AI to improve performance shouldn't mean less visibility,” Microsoft said. Yet visibility depends on configuration discipline. AI Max settings can now be carried into Microsoft Advertising through Google Import, and scheduled imports will keep inheriting settings from corresponding Google campaigns. Microsoft will also enable AI Max by default for newly created search campaigns, although advertisers can turn it off.

Why APAC Teams Need Local Tests

Google is moving in the same direction. Its AI Max suite also combines expanded query matching, text customisation and final URL expansion, and Google says non-retail advertisers typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS.

There is relevant regional evidence. A Google case study said Shopee doubled orders in Singapore and Malaysia while raising ROI 49% and lowering cost per order 23% using AI Max for Search. That supports serious testing, but it does not remove the need to validate performance by language, product category and market.

For regional marketing leaders, final URL expansion and generated copy deserve particular scrutiny. A page that is suitable for one Southeast Asian market may carry the wrong offer, claim, language or consent treatment in another. Imported campaign settings should therefore trigger a local review, not inherit approval automatically.

What CMOs Should Require Next

The executive decision is not simply whether to switch AI Max on. CMOs should assign named owners for query expansion, generated copy, landing-page routing and imported settings, then require controlled tests that hold budgets and bid strategies steady. Lead quality, incrementality and local compliance should sit beside conversion volume in the scorecard.

Microsoft's decision to keep Dynamic Search Ads available, even as Google prepares to move legacy DSA campaigns into AI Max, preserves an alternative for advertisers that want a narrower automation model. That choice matters only if teams document why each campaign uses one system and which controls must survive an import.

AI Max suggests paid search management is moving beyond keyword selection toward governance of the algorithm choosing intent, message and destination. The advantage may not go to the brand with the most automation, but to the one with the clearest rules for where it may act and the evidence required before it scales.
