Seven-SCA Merger Drives Triple M Downloads Up 50x in Days
Seven-SCA's merger unlocked a 50-fold surge in cricket commentary downloads by aligning TV, radio, and streaming. CMOs should watch how cross-platform integration drives audience growth.
Australia's newly merged Seven-SCA media company has reported a 50-fold surge in Triple M cricket commentary downloads within days of the deal closing on January 7, 2026.
Daily downloads of Ashes test commentary on the Listnr audio platform jumped from approximately 400 to 20,000 for the latest Test match, according to Seven-SCA.
Merger Architecture Behind the Audience Surge
The approximately US$417 million deal combines Seven Network's free-to-air television and 7plus streaming platform (15.2 million registered users) with Southern Cross Austereo's 99+ radio stations and Listnr on-demand audio platform (2.5 million signed-in users).

Seven shareholders approved the merger on December 22, 2025, with 99% support. The deal targets US$25 to US$30 million in annual pre-tax cost savings.
Ewan Giles, Seven's head of sports, attributed the download growth directly to cross-platform promotion. "It is the first time where sales and content, TV and audio have been completely aligned," Giles said. "We can show the entire industry what we can achieve working together."
New Content Products Launched Post-Merger
The merged company has already launched Club Cast, a series of half-hour podcasts covering every AFL and NRL club. The product draws content from Triple M, SCA's sports podcast portfolio, and Seven television programs.
The Rugby League World Cup, scheduled for October to November 2026, is identified as the merger's flagship content opportunity. Seven holds broadcast rights and plans to offer both a traditional Channel Seven commentary stream and a Triple M commentary track on 7plus. This will be the first time a single Australian media entity delivers dual commentary options for a major international sports event.
Listnr is also expanding into video advertising and has launched an influencer program through a partnership with Fabulate, using AI-powered tools to identify and activate content creators at scale.
Listnr Platform Reaches Profitability
Listnr launched in March 2021 and achieved profitability in the second half of 2024. The platform added its advertising technology hub in March 2024, giving the merged entity a data-driven tool to measure audience reach across television, radio, podcast, and streaming formats.

SCA interim CEO John Kelly highlighted Listnr's Australian ownership as a competitive advantage. "What sets Listnr apart is that it is owned by Australians and built for Australians, giving us the ability to continuously evolve our technology roadmap," Kelly said. He contrasted this with competitor ARN, which operates under restrictions from US conglomerate iHeart.
Global M&A Context
The Seven-SCA merger aligns with a broader global pattern. Sports tech M&A reached US$156 billion in disclosed deal value across 450 transactions in 2025, according to Drake Star.
The Rugby League World Cup in late 2026 will serve as the first major test of the merged entity's unified content and advertising capabilities.
