Snap Expands AR Developer Program Across APAC as India Leads Global Lens Production

Snap Inc. is repositioning augmented reality as a commercial business tool across Asia-Pacific, backed by a developer community of more than 400,000 global creators and platform data showing India has become the world's largest producer of AR Lenses.

India Leads Global AR Lens Production as Snap Scales Developer Outreach

India's AR developer community grew more than 50% over two years and now hosts the highest number of AR Lenses globally. Snap hosted more than 120 Lens Studio training meetups across India in 2024, reaching over 6,000 developers. Outreach extended well beyond major cities to include Surat, Coimbatore, Rajkot, Trichy, Trivandrum, and Gwalior.

Over 85% of Indian Snapchatters use Lenses around cultural moments and festivals, according to platform data. Snap's 458 million daily active users in early 2026 represent 10% year-over-year growth, with APAC recorded as the platform's fastest-growing region.

Snap Frames AR as Utility, Not Novelty

Joseph Darko, Global Head of AR Developer Relations at Snap Inc., described the regional shift in a recent interview with Branding in Asia. "Asia-Pacific is entering a new phase where AR moves beyond experimentation toward genuine usefulness," Darko said. "Rather than building experiences around the technology itself, developers are creating practical solutions that help people understand or accomplish tasks in the moment."

OpenAI Appoints First APAC Managing Director as Region Hits 28% of Global AI Market
OpenAI names Kiran Mani as first APAC Managing Director, signaling structural shift as Asia-Pacific hits 28% of global AI market. A major move for enterprise adoption across India, Southeast Asia, and beyond.

Darko pointed to Singapore's Super Travel Lens, which translates signs, menus, and receipts in real time for cross-border travelers, as an example of this approach. A Teleprompter Lens that helps presenters maintain eye contact with audiences was cited as another practical application.

Snap is building a unified AR development environment across mobile devices, wearables, and its Spectacles AR glasses using Lens Studio as a single creative platform. This allows developers to build once on mobile and extend experiences to hands-free devices as hardware matures.

Commercial Data Supports Brand Investment Case

AR-guided purchases produce a 94% higher conversion rate and a 25% decrease in product returns compared to non-AR purchases. Gucci generated more than 20 million virtual try-ons of its latest sneaker collection using Snap AR Lenses, illustrating how brands are using AR to drive measurable commercial outcomes.

Snap reported US$5.9 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue, driven in part by AR commerce and advertising. The company has invested more than US$3 billion internally in Spectacles development. Smart glasses shipments grew 44.4% year-over-year in 2025.

APAC Market Context and Competitive Landscape

The Asia-Pacific AR market reached an estimated US$26 to US$36 billion in 2024 to 2025 and is projected to grow at 30 to 40% annually through 2030 to 2034. APAC accounts for approximately 40% of total global AR growth through 2029.

China holds 38.5% of the regional market share, supported by CNY 15 billion (~US$2.1 billion) in government XR funding. Alibaba's AR shopping platform has driven conversion rate increases of up to 40% on its e-commerce platform, establishing a competitive benchmark for AR-driven retail in the region.

Snap's AR software segment is projected to grow at 41.2% annually through 2030. "When a task becomes easier with hands-free AR than without it, behavior changes," Darko said.

Snap has not announced a specific timeline for broader Spectacles availability across APAC markets.
