Why Spotify's ANZ Comms Overhaul Signals a Global Strategy Shift
Spotify's dual Sydney recruitment for comms and creative strategy roles signals a shift toward embedding regional voices in global strategy, not just managing local media.
Melissa Circosta has departed Spotify's Australia and New Zealand communications team after nearly six years, and the streaming platform is now recruiting a Sydney-based replacement to lead its ANZ communications function.
Spotify confirmed the search following Circosta's exit, with the role formally described as a "bridge between local priorities and global direction."
Role Framing Points to a Broader Shift in Regional Comms
The job description language signals more than a routine replacement hire. The ANZ communications lead is now expected to ensure the region's voice is embedded in global strategy, not simply manage local media relationships.

Circosta, who joined Spotify in July 2020 after two years as Australasia Communications Lead at Mastercard, oversaw a period of significant platform growth. Under her leadership, Spotify expanded podcasting, video podcasting, and audiobooks in the region. She managed communications around the re-signing of Joe Rogan and delivered the first-ever Spotify House activation in Asia Pacific at SXSW Sydney in 2023.
In June 2024, her team hosted Australian artist Tones and I at Parliament House, a nationally symbolic venue.
On LinkedIn, Circosta stated: "After nearly six years helping build Spotify's voice across the region, I've decided to step away and write the next chapter." She added: "I am drawn to what's next, ambitious companies, bold ideas and the communications challenges that come with them."
Spotify confirmed her departure is unrelated to internal restructuring.

A Second Senior APAC Role Is Also Being Replaced
Spotify is simultaneously recruiting a Sydney-based replacement for its creative strategy function in APAC. Vanessa Goh, who joined Spotify in 2019, held that role until it was redefined following the global launch of Spotify's in-house creative agency, Creative Lab, in July 2024.
The dual recruitment in Sydney indicates Spotify is reinvesting in local APAC talent rather than centralizing these functions in Singapore or at a global level.
Spotify's APAC structure includes General Manager Gautam Talwar, who represents the region at major events including SXSW Sydney, and Jan-Paul Jeffrey as Head of Marketing, Asia, based in Singapore. The ANZ communications lead operates within this broader regional structure while also aligning with Spotify's global communications leadership.
Regional Comms Leads Now Carry a Larger Mandate
The Circosta departure, combined with the Creative Lab restructure, illustrates how global organizational changes cascade into regional roles. Local leaders at major platforms are now expected to manage cultural activations of global significance, navigate complex reporting structures, and demonstrate measurable business impact alongside traditional media relations.

Research on internal communications indicates that 85% of employees report higher motivation when organizational communications are effective, underlining the business performance dimension these roles now carry beyond external PR.
Spotify will begin recruitment for both Sydney-based positions immediately, according to Mumbrella.
