ABC Breaks Decades of Tradition, Hires Reuters Chief as News Director

Australia's public broadcaster just made its most significant leadership appointment in decades. The ABC has appointed Simon Robinson, executive editor at Reuters, as its new director of news and current affairs. He will take up the role full-time in September 2026.

The announcement came fast. Within hours of outgoing news director Justin Stevens publicly resigning on May 28, ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks confirmed Robinson as his successor. That compressed timeline has drawn attention across the Australian media industry.

It is reportedly the first time in decades that the ABC has gone outside its own ranks to fill this role.

Who Is Simon Robinson?

Robinson is not a figure plucked from relative obscurity. He has spent 16 or more years at Reuters, most recently as executive editor, overseeing a global newsroom of 2,600 journalists across 150 countries. Before Reuters, he spent more than a decade as a Time magazine correspondent, reporting from over 50 countries across Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

His investigative credentials are substantial. At Reuters, Robinson led the editorial team that produced award-winning series on Iran, Russia, corporate taxation, Greek banks and migration. He was appointed Reuters executive editor in October 2022 and had been widely seen as one of the leading figures in international wire journalism.

He also started his career in Australia, working as a fact-checker at Time Inc in Sydney. "I grew up listening to and watching ABC News," Robinson said in the official release. "On a personal note, I am delighted this role brings me home, among family and friends."

Questions Over the Timing

Justin Stevens resigned after almost 19 years at the ABC, including four years as news director. He described the role as "incredibly tough but immensely rewarding." The stated reasons were professional and personal.

But within 24 hours, Senate Estimates senators were pressing Marks on whether Stevens was pushed rather than choosing to leave. Marks denied it: "I don't make threats, senator." The speed of Robinson's confirmation fueled further questions about whether the succession was arranged in advance, not reactive.

Stevens' tenure was not without controversy. The ABC faced credibility challenges over the Heston Russell case and a fake gunshots scandal, both of which attracted significant public and parliamentary scrutiny.

What This Signals for the ABC

Going external for a senior editorial appointment is a genuine departure for the ABC. It signals that Marks is not satisfied with the internal talent pipeline for this role and wants fresh leadership at the top of the news division.

Over 90% of ABC staff voted to strike after rejecting management's below-inflation pay offer. The walkout signals growing media industry pressure on wages and talent retention across Australia.

The Reuters model is built around neutrality, investigative rigor and global scale. That is exactly the editorial identity Marks has been pushing for. He described Robinson as "one of the most experienced and respected newsroom leaders in global journalism," adding that his "deep commitment to independent, fact-based reporting" made him the right choice.

The ABC is also pursuing a broader strategic reset in 2026. It has launched ABC News Loop, a made-for-social explainer journalism format, and unveiled a slate of 100 or more new and returning titles. It has also cut ties with external diversity and inclusion organizations to reinforce the separation between journalism and external affiliations.

What This Means for Media Relations Professionals

For communications professionals, this is a meaningful change. The ABC remains the most influential earned media platform in Australia. A new news director with a global wire service background will bring different editorial instincts to what gets covered, how it is framed and who gets access.

Robinson has spent his career prioritizing investigative and enterprise journalism. That is a different editorial approach compared to a career ABC insider. It suggests the broadcaster will be sharper on stories that touch institutional power, including corporate and government communications.

If you pitch the ABC regularly, expect the bar for news value to rise. Robinson knows what a global news story looks like. Australian-only angles with weak evidence will get less consideration. Credibility, specificity and documented sources will matter more.

He does not start until September. But the direction of travel is already clear.
