HYBE Appoints Disney+ Architect Kevin Mayer to Board

HYBE elevates Disney+ architect Kevin Mayer to its board as the K-pop giant accelerates Western expansion ahead of BTS's largest US tour. Strategic move signals governance-level commitment to global platform growth.

HYBE Appoints Disney+ Architect Kevin Mayer to Board

South Korean entertainment company HYBE appointed Kevin Mayer, former TikTok CEO and Disney streaming executive, to its Board of Directors on March 31, 2026, at a shareholders' meeting, signaling a push to accelerate its international growth strategy.

A Governance-Level Appointment With Strategic Weight

Mayer joins HYBE as a non-executive director, bringing 22 years of Disney experience and his role as Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Candle Media. He is best known for leading the launch of Disney+, which surpassed 50 million subscribers within five months of its debut.

In an official statement, HYBE said Mayer's "macro-level insights for managing strategic risks in global platform businesses will greatly contribute to HYBE achieving sustainable growth in the global market."

Isaac Lee, CEO of HYBE America, was simultaneously elevated to the board as an inside director. Lee co-founded Exile Content Studio, which HYBE acquired in 2022, giving the dual appointment a pre-existing commercial foundation.

Appointment Timed to BTS Comeback and Record Revenue

HYBE recorded US$1.86 billion in annual revenue in 2025, driven by BTS's ARIRANG album comeback and an 82-show world tour across 34 cities. The group's music video "Swim" accumulated over 86 million YouTube views within two weeks of release.

BTS is set to launch US tour dates in spring and summer 2026, representing the largest commercial activation in HYBE's history. Mayer's board tenure begins as the company prepares to capitalize on that momentum.

Mayer's brief four-month tenure as TikTok's first US CEO in 2020 ended amid US regulatory pressure. HYBE's decision to appoint him suggests the company views his experience navigating politically sensitive Western markets as a direct asset.

HYBE Builds Western Infrastructure Across Multiple Fronts

The Mayer appointment sits above an expanding operational structure HYBE has been building across the US. The company launched HYBE Label Service, a US-based division covering global distribution, marketing, and promotion, with dedicated presidents appointed for each function. Its Nashville operation was rebranded to Blue Highway Records as part of its US localization effort.

HYBE has also committed US$100 million in investment to HYBE America and launched HYBE China in April 2025 and HYBE India Entertainment in September 2025. A follow-up North American girl group is in development with producer Ryan Tedder, building on the KATSEYE model.

Competing label JYP Entertainment is recruiting AI and Unreal Engine specialists through its Blue Garage unit to develop a virtual K-pop artist, illustrating that Western executive recruitment is one of several strategies K-pop's major labels are using to scale globally.

Mayer's Track Record and the Pre-Existing HYBE Connection

Beyond Disney+, Mayer's 22-year Disney tenure included oversight of major acquisitions. His Candle Media co-venture has an existing link to HYBE through the Exile Content Studio acquisition, which was co-founded by HYBE America CEO Isaac Lee.

Confirmed by Korean outlet Chosun Biz on April 1, 2026, the appointment formalizes a relationship with established trust between both parties. HYBE's 2026 world tour will serve as the first major test of whether the company's expanding Western governance structure translates into commercial results.
