Why Indies Are Betting on Veteran Agency Leaders Like Kate Sheppard

Independent agency Enigma appoints veteran DDB leader Kate Sheppard as Sydney MD, reuniting her with former colleague Dom Hickey. The move signals how indie agencies are competing with holding groups by recruiting proven network talent.

Why Indies Are Betting on Veteran Agency Leaders Like Kate Sheppard

Independent creative and media agency Enigma has appointed Kate Sheppard as Managing Director Sydney, strengthening its leadership team as independent agencies across Australia compete directly with large holding group networks.

Sheppard Brings Two Decades of Integrated Agency Experience

Sheppard joins Enigma with more than 20 years of experience managing large, integrated agency teams across creative, strategy, media, and client services. Her career spans categories including quick-service restaurants, consumer goods, travel, retail, professional services, and government.

Most recently, she served as Managing Director at Connecting Plots. Before that, she spent nearly 20 years at DDB, where she ran a dedicated Omnicom agency for Johnson and Johnson ANZ, overseeing both creative and media functions alongside Enigma's current Chief Strategy Officer, Dom Hickey.

Sheppard will work alongside CEO and Founder Lisa Sutton Gardner, CSO Dom Hickey, Chief Creative Officer Simon Lee, and Chief Media Officer Justin Ladmore.

"In many ways, this is a role that I've been preparing for my whole career," Sheppard said. "Lisa has set me and the team a bold challenge in a tough market, one that calls for the perspective and rigour I honed leading big, complex businesses in network agencies, as well as the adaptability and pace I have wholeheartedly embraced with my recent indie experience."

Enigma Rebuilds Proven Leadership Partnership From DDB

A notable feature of the appointment is the deliberate reunion of Sheppard and Hickey. The two built a working relationship at DDB managing a combined creative and media operation for a major global client. Transplanting that tested partnership into Enigma's independent structure reduces the friction that typically comes with pairing new executives who have never worked together.

Independent Agency Bolsters Media Buying With Network-Trained Talent
Australian independent agency The Media Store appoints EssenceMediacom veteran Brady Lyon as Investment Director, signaling how independents compete with networks through specialized talent recruitment.

Sutton Gardner framed the hire as a counter-move against market uncertainty. "At a time when many agencies are understandably running scared, I'm doubling down on where I know the greatest value to clients lies: a team of world class strategic and creative business-problem solvers," she said.

Sheppard cited the existing team as a key draw, describing Hickey as someone she deeply respects and has a proven track record with, and pointing to Lee and Ladmore's commitment to creative and media integration.

Appointment Is Part of a Broader Leadership Build

The Sheppard hire is one of several senior appointments Enigma has made in recent months. The agency recently named Simon Lee as its first-ever Chief Creative Officer and Partner, following a six-month search. Justin Ladmore was promoted to Chief Media Officer and Partner. Jenna Russell, who spent 18 years at London agencies leading global strategies for brands including Mondelez and Kimberly-Clark, joined as Executive Strategy Director. Clare Yardley, formerly of BMF, was appointed Head of Creative Services across Sydney, Newcastle, and Brisbane. John Gutteridge was appointed to a newly created National CEO role, the first in the agency's 30-year history.

Enigma also recently won Australian Pork's media account, cited as evidence of new business momentum alongside the appointments.
